Swaffham has a large market place, the result of a sheep and wool trade that prospered here in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the market cross standing in it is Grade I: a timber structure rendered and painted to imitate limestone, on a stone base, under a lead roof. It was presented to the town in 1783 by George Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford. The parish church of St Peter and St Paul is flint, Barnack stone and some brick with lead roofs, its nave carrying an early 16th century double hammerbeam roof with carved wooden angels on the hammerbeams.
