North Walsham's Market Place is lined on its north and south sides with terraced houses, all fronting directly onto the street, most with a classical or later Georgian character and shops in the ground floor. That shapes a roof job here: no front garden, nowhere to stand a scaffold off the pavement, and access to the front slope from the footway only. Local brickworks produced red clay pantiles as well as bricks, and North Walsham also has matte grey glazed and glossy black glazed pantiles, with some houses carrying glazed pantiles at the front and plain red ones at the rear. On a house like that the front slope and the back slope need different tiles, so each side gets matched to what is already on it.
North Walsham lies 8 miles south of Cromer, with Norwich a further 15 miles south. The town has its own station on the Bittern Line between Norwich, Cromer and Sheringham. A fire on 25th June 1600 destroyed 118 houses, 70 shops and other structures, and around the Market Place the town was rebuilt on its medieval footprint, preserved today in the pattern of the older streets and buildings.
Some early stock survives: the 17th century 26-7 Market Place and Feathers Hotel, whose steep pitches suggest original thatch, and Kett House on the corner of the Mundesley and Cromer Roads, thatched still. Slate occurs on some 18th century houses, though it has been suggested most of those were reroofed in the later 19th century, after the railways arrived. Good 19th century terraces as well.
