Mattishall never grew out from a single centre. It formed as a polyfocal nucleated village, with historic development around All Saints Church, west along Dereham Road, at Mattishall Burgh and at South Green. In the older streets the fronts are red brick, white painted brick or rendered, the roof form is gabled, coverings are typically red clay tiles, and many buildings still carry tall traditional chimney stacks that only stay dry if the flashings and flaunching are kept right. Across the wider village the coverings also run to natural slate and grey concrete tiles.
