Aylsham's centre is a run of eighteenth and early nineteenth century Georgian fronts around a wedge-shaped Market Place, and the district council's conservation area statement lists red and black pantiles among a limited local palette, alongside red brick, sand-lime render, gault brick and carstone. That mix decides how a roof here gets repaired. Pantile slopes want like-for-like replacements and sound bedding at ridge and verge, not concrete interlockers dropped onto an old batten gauge. Slate came later, once the railways made it cheap to import, and pitches were lowered to suit it, so two quite different roof systems sit close together in the town centre. We handle both: stripping and relaying pantiles, patching slate, sorting valleys, flashings, chimney leadwork and gutters on frontages where the eaves line is in full view from the street.
Aylsham sits on the River Bure, nearly nine miles north of Norwich, so it is a short run out for us rather than a cross-county trip. The conservation area was designated in 1972, extended in 1981 to take in the Old Hall and grounds on Blickling Road, and extended again in 1990 to cover the area between Heydon Road and Blickling Road plus Drabblegate in the Bure valley. Inside those boundaries, and on anything listed, it pays to check what consent a re-roof needs before a single tile comes off.
Beyond the historic core there are runs of Victorian semi-detached houses on Oakfield Road, and modern estates on every approach out of the centre. Older boundary walls are often flint, and plenty of timber frames survive beneath rendering or brick facing, so a solid-looking front is not always what it appears when fixings and scaffold go in.
