The fire that began on Sunday 11 June 1615 took the Market Cross, the vicarage, the old town hall and the schoolhouse with it. The Cross went back up in 1617-18, timber-framed under a pyramid roof of plain peg tiles, and it is Grade I listed today. The council's appraisal calls it the prime example of the slate and pegtiled roofs on the town's more significant buildings; many of the roofs are steeply pitched, mostly clay pantile in black and red. That mix decides how a job is priced. A slipped black pantile on the Market Place is a different repair from a peg tile roof like the Cross's own, and both want matching rather than whatever is nearest on the merchant's rack.
