A fire on 25 April 1674 destroyed sixty houses and the Butchers Shambles in Watton. Separately, 56 and 58 High Street are late 17th century clay lump, refaced in brick in the late 1700s and roofed in pantiles. Clay lump is unfired earth, and it does not forgive a leaking roof for long, so on a building like that the state of the covering matters more than it would over solid brick.
