Long Stratton sits astride the old Pye Road line, the Roman road up from Colchester to Venta Icenorum outside Norwich and the route the A140 followed through the town. The conservation area appraisal records clay pantiles as the prevalent roofing material here, with an unusually large proportion of them blue or black glazed rather than red. That matters on a repair. Glazed pantiles are not a stock item on a merchant's rack, so a patch done in plain reds shows from the pavement for years afterwards, and matching usually means salvage or a careful hunt. We work on pantile roofs through the town: slipped and cracked tiles, failed mortar at verges and ridges, and valleys where later back additions meet the original range. Chimney stacks on these long frontages take the weather too, and repointing is usually the cheaper job before water reaches a bedroom ceiling.
The Long Stratton bypass opened to traffic on 11 August 2025 and runs around the east of the town, so through traffic no longer grinds past the town centre. That makes loading and getting a scaffold up on the old frontages easier than it was. The bypass came with permission for 1,800 new homes and a primary school. The town sits halfway between Norwich and Diss, south of the city.
The Street is a long ribbon of frontages: timber framed buildings refaced in three-inch red brick, and gault brick weathered to grey on the older part of Netherton House, which with its former coach house is one of the few slated buildings in the conservation area. Clay peg tiles survive on No. 3 The Street. Thatch is down to a single cottage at the north end of the conservation area.
