Horsford sits about six miles north west of Norwich, and from the main road it still reads as ribbon development that has grown organically, with closes and estates filling in behind the frontage. Horsbeck Way and Gordon Godfrey Way come off the Holt Road, and the cul-de-sacs behind them are tied together by foot and cycle paths. Those paths carry people rather than vans, so on the estates the nearest place to stand a tower or drop a skip is often the head of the close, not the house itself, and we sort that out before quoting rather than on the morning. The older frontage plots are easier, with room down the side to stand a scaffold. Pitched re-roofs, tile and slate repairs, ridge and verge work and flat roofs over extensions are the usual jobs.
All Saints on Church Street is listed Grade II*, and the listing records flint walls with stone dressings and roofs of pantiles and thatch, a fair guide to what the older coverings round here look like. The village has grown quickly, from 4,163 people at the 2011 census to 4,937 in 2021. St Helena mill, a red brick tower mill put up between 1860 and 1865, had its cap craned back into place in 2008.
At the 2011 census 98.9 per cent of Horsford households lived in houses or bungalows and only 0.8 per cent in flats, with just under half detached. Mill Gardens is 1960s bungalows, a mixture of detached and semi detached, some with roof space and extensions added, so dormer cheeks, converted lofts and lean-to roofs off the back come up here.
