Fires in 1581 and again in the seventeenth century destroyed many of Dereham's ancient buildings, which is why the town appears Georgian today. The parish church of St Nicholas survived, and so did the early sixteenth-century bell tower that stands detached from it, built in four stages of flints with stone quoins and stringcourses. The parish now holds 111 listed buildings, one grade I, one grade II*, and the rest grade II. On a listed building the replacement normally has to match what came off, and anything that changes the look needs consent, so the work is judged on the detail: verges, flashings, and lead dressed into old flint and brick.
