The Great Fire of 1688 took most of Bungay, and the town rebuilt itself in Georgian brick. The roofline over the middle of town still comes from that rebuild: red or black pantiles, laid over walls of red or yellow brick and colour-washed timber-frame. Earsham Street shows it plainly, with C18 red brick fronts, a parapet above the windows and rows of dormers cut into the slope. Those are the details that fail first here. Water gets behind a parapet, a dormer cheek opens up, or a single pantile lifts and the felt underneath takes the weather instead. Our work in the town is mostly that: matching pantiles to what is already on the roof rather than mixing colours, relining parapet and valley gutters in lead, bedding and repointing ridges, and making dormers watertight again instead of covering them over.
Bungay is 15 miles south of Norwich and linked by the A143 and A144, so getting a crew and materials over is a short run. There is no station in the town; the nearest is Beccles, about 6 miles east on the East Suffolk Line. The old town stands on rising land at the base of a meander in the River Waveney, with the valley flood plain and marshes lying north, so exposure and damp are not the same on the high streets as on the low ground.
At the 2011 census, roughly a third of Bungay's 2,265 dwellings were detached houses or bungalows and another third semi-detached, with three-bedroom homes the commonest at 42%. The town's own plan describes later building as departing from the old pattern towards peripheral cell estates, so a call out there and a call in the centre are two different jobs.
